History of the Hadley School for the Blind

The Founder

When Wiliam A. Hadley lost his sight at the age of 55, he taught himself braille, so that he could continue reading. He was saddened, however, to find that there were no educational opportunities for adults who were blind.
Together with Dr. E. V. L. Brown, an ophthalmologist and neighbor, Mr. Hadley conceived the idea of teaching braille by mail.

In 1920, the school opend to its first student, who was personally taught by Mr. Hadley.

When Mr. Hadley died in 1941, the school had 800 students.
Since that time, more than 10.000 course graduates have enriched their lives through Hadley courses. Today, Hadley's average anual student enrollment is 100.000 from all states of the U. S. A. and over 70 foreign countries
